Colour Me Crazy

Nothing what-so-ever to do with home renovations, but we had fun and those of you who have kids, our egg-colouring adventure may give you some inspiration for Easter this year. We did a marbelizing technique that I found in one of my Martha Stewart Living from a couple years ago, but you could experiment with pretty much anything you want- layering colours by melted bees wax or sticky tape, keep it simple or go completely hog wild and get one of those ukranian egg colouring kits... maybe next year we'll try that!


Materials
Egg blower or one of those suction thingys for newborns
12 eggs
Several mixing bowls, shallow and deep
Measuring spoons
Liquid measuring cup
White vinegar
Food colouring
Spoon and fork
Olive oil
Paper towels

How to Marbleize
With an egg blower, pierce the top and bottom of each egg, puncturing the yolk; carefully expel the contents. Rinse, and let dry.

1. In a small mixing bowl, combine 3 cups warm water, 2 tablespoons vinegar, and 10 to 20 drops of food colouring. Place egg in dye, and leave it until it turns the colour you want.

2. In a wide, shallow bowl, prepare a second batch of dye—which will provide the swirls—in a darker shade or a different color. Liquid should be no deeper than one half-inch. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil. Run a fork through this mixture, creating curlicues of oil on the surface.

3. As oil swirls, place dyed egg in mixture, and roll it once around the bowl to pick up oil streaks; remove the egg.

4. Gently pat egg with a paper towel.

5. Let it dry. Experiment with colour combinations- you won't be disappointed!
