Spring Cleaning

I spent most of yesterday cleaning the basement, just so I can get to it to do more work. Basements just seem to be junk collection havens, I couldn't believe all the stuff that ends up down there. It looks like we need to make another trip to the dump, our garage is almost full of wood that is mostly salvaged from the house, or scrap lumber from the retaining wall forms. I try to salvage as much material as I can, I just don't like waste, and some of the old wood is really nice. At least I can get to where I can tear out the parts of the basement slab that are settled and cracked, or where we need to do plumbing. I cleaned up the work bench as well, you can see the surface again. I need to learn how to clean as I go, I'm sure it would make me work faster as well. Anyways, it feels really cathartic to have a cleaner basement to work in.

What have you built with your salvaged lumber? I can't bear to use most of the stuff from our house for framing again, and for several pieces I've milled them into furniture or trim. They dont make 2x4s like they used to...

I haven't done a lot with the lumber yet. I'm planing on making some built-ins upstairs, I don't have a lot of wood that is good. The former homeowners got rid of a lot of stuff, including 9" baseboards in the bedroom. I have an old door that is falling apart, that is a good candidate for something. My neighbour is a contractor, and he brings home some salvaged stuff that's really nice. He had some 2x14's he used to make wainscotting in the bathroom.

Doors make nice desks or coffee tables. If it's in very bad shape, I think they look really neat in the garden.

it's not in really bad shape, just not good enough to be used as a door. It was cut down on one side, and the hinges aren't mortised, and there is a metal plate at the bottom. It's vg douglas fir, so I know I can use it as part of the door trim, or to make some kind of cabinet. I don't think deb would let me put it in the garden
